Hit Productions recently conducted a whole day seminar for the producers’ group known as Just Add Water. The seminar was held at Hit’s newly opened Events Hall. The workshop covered various aspects of music production and was highly informative for both JAW and Hit teams alike, as both were able to compare and exchange notes on workflow and process.

Composer Vince de Jesus took the producers on a riotously funny yet educational series of music-themed games to start the session. Music department head Mike Villegas then led an engaging discussion about the briefing process and the pros and cons of using musical pegs for creative work. Guest speaker Christine Bendebel finished off the morning sessions with an eye-opening talk about music licensing and dealing with local and foreign publishers.

After a delicious lunch provided by JAW, the afternoon was spent in even more serious discussion of the details of the tripartite MOA between PANA, ASAP and the 4As as well as the nitty gritty of production cost drivers and talent fees. This forum was led by Hit chairman Salito Malca and CEO Vic Icasas as well as Hit broadcast producer Sharon Ambas. Finally, to end the day on a less serious note, the session was capped off by an impromptu Xbox 360 Kinect dance showdown which left everyone laughing and giggling.

Singer and regular Hit voice talent Gail Blanco provided entertainment during the breakfast and lunch breaks, with a backup band made up of the Hit composers themselves.

If you would like Hit Productions to conduct a similar seminar or workshop for your ad agency or group, please contact us for details.

Ironic isn’t it? Dennis Cham is soft spoken yet has created one of the country’s foremost sound-tech powerhouses. With a Chinoy DNA built for business, this awkward science nerd heard a call ringing clear as a bell in his discerning ear back in the 80s. From working in the California studios where Huey Lewis and the News and Heart created the decade’s emblematic hits, he spent the 90s as a partner in creating the country’s most-awarded audio post-production house, Hit Productions.

It’s safe to say he’s led a one-track life where sound and its science are all that echoes in his ear.

So much so that he jets off to LA, Hong Kong and Japan time after time each year just so he can stay in tune with sound’s evolving technology. His travels have not only ensured the studio remains precisely and acoustically correct but have also put him in touch with a network of acclaimed audiophiles.

Thanks to Cham, this network of the world’s top ears from leading global studios is now on our radar and has resulted in collaborations such as the one with Academy Award-nominated director John Sayles for the epic film Amigo.

Like shattered glass and the sonic boom, Cham proves that sound is as much a physical as it is an audio experience. And through the years, he has let Hit’s sounds do the talking for him.

A line in Simon and Garfunkel’s song “The Sound of Silence” goes: “People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening.”

Sounds like an ad that’s not communicating and an audience that’s ignoring what it is saying.

Tired of seeing ads that just fire away and talk coldly? Try radio. The medium hits it right.

On radio, the announcer does not ‘talk but speaks’ directly to you, on a one-on-one basis.

“Crafted in the same manner, radio ads have the same effect and can be more engaging than any other medium,” says a media director.

Radio ads instantaneously get listeners’ attention because it’s emotion to emotion, talking to the audience personally.

“Without human emotion, not even the flashiest, latest technology in advertising, 3-D and all that jazz can connect to consumers,” a multiawarded radio ad copywriter says.

Radio fills in the emotion where other media cannot.

Warm, not cold, intimate not detached, personal not otherwise, a medium with a heart—that is radio.

KBP [Kapisanan ng Mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas] reports that radio reach in the Philippines is 98.5 percent of the population, one of the highest in Southeast Asia.

“Not only are many Filipinos tuning in to radio, they also spend much time listening—17.7 hours per week,” it says.

Producing a simple 30-second radio commercial is just a drop in the bucket compared to what advertisers spend on a TV commercial.

“You can have it in the can from P50,000 to P90,000 fully recorded, edited and mixed using a single-voice talent,” a producer says.

And it costs just a fraction of TV ad to air a single radio spot—P5,000 to P7,000 on prime time of top-rating FM stations. The cost is even lower on AM stations.

Radio 101

As in all other ads, a radio ad begins with a script.

It can be a one-off (single campaign) or part of an integrated effort (full-blown advertising) based on a specific theme.

The usual ingredients of a great radio ad are: a creative script rich with witty lines delivered by great voice talents.

Sound effects, music and overall sound design can also make or break a radio ad.

You need a reliable sound studio that can deliver crisp, flawless mixing and editing to soar.

Business Friday interviews Vic Icasas, president and managing Partner of Hit Productions—the Philippines’ most dominant audio production house for the last 20 years.

As everyone knows in the ad industry, Hit produced the Philippines’ first ever Cannes Gold Lion in radio (created by JWT Manila in 2007 for client Lotus Spa).

Winner of 11 incredible times (out of the last 14 years) as 4A’s Audio Production House of the Year, Hit is also a twice winner of Ad Congress’ Production House of the Year award.

Business Friday: How is radio advertising in this digital age?

Vic Icasas: I think it’s undeniable that radio advertising in the Philippines isn’t what it used to be.

In the past year or two, we’ve noticed a definite downturn in the amount of radio spots being done at our studio.

I was also asked to help judge at last year’s Ad Congress and was taken aback not just by how many digital short films and viral ads were nominated but few radio campaigns showed up as finalists. Can’t be a coincidence.

BF: What can radio do that other communication channels cannot?

VI: Radio can be very specifically targeted at provinces and regions where a national TV campaign doesn’t quite do the trick.

We have a tie-up with a major Philippine radio network that helps us find authentic local talents and record genuine dialect tracks that aren’t diluted by the big city.

Music-driven radio ads, i.e. jingle and song-based campaigns, will always have a natural home on radio, and for a music-loving country like ours, I don’t see that going away anytime soon.

A creative radio script, executed properly, can still evoke images and situations that even a big-budget TV ad and the most sophisticated computer graphics cannot.

BF: Why is Hit a hit among many ad agencies, what’s your secret?

VI: We take great pride in the quality of our service.

Working with ad agencies and producers is always a team effort.

They bring us their ideas, and we do our best to execute and craft them the way they envisioned or even come up with something totally new.

We pride ourselves on being not just a supplier but as collaborator.

A big part of the team is made up of passionate and creative people aged 20 years to early 30s so we’re still attuned to the sound of the younger generation.

BF: How do you keep abreast with the growing demands of clients?

VI: My partners and I are constantly trying to reinvent our business model to adjust to the changes in the industry.

We were the first company to put both music composers and audio post studios under one roof, unheard of back then.

There was also a time that almost every bit of advertising music you’d hear came from synthesizers and computerized orchestras the agencies got tired of them.

So we hired a top American ‘acoustician’ and built a great band-recording studio capable of recording everything.

From live horn sections to vocal groups to jazz quartets, with a real grand piano and upright bass to live ukelele, an ethnic percussion track, or a Christmas carol played on coffee mugs, Hit Productions has recorded them all.

Today, the award-winning audio production company has a 7.1 digital-cinema surround mix-room, with an adjoining Foley sound effects recording studio with a whole slew of props and toys.

Want to hear even the tiniest drop of water to its crispiest detail?

Hit has different kinds of floor surfaces that can capture that, a bathtub with a microphone – “all to take the quality of sound effects beyond the normal stuff that comes off from a CD library,” Icasas says.

In the last few months Hit has also done a couple of surround mixes for cinema and event projects, hitting big happy results.

With radio and TV commercial soundtrack recordings, Hit can’t really be a hit and miss. It’s sure thing.

Hit Productions was in a festive mood last December 15th at the annual staff Christmas party, with games, raffles, food, and drinks galore.

Hosted by Sharon Ambas and Richard Genabe, the party served as a soft opening of the new third floor client lounge and events hall (watch out for it!).

Once again, the 50-plus strong crew proved that their strong appetite for work is only rivaled by an equally strong appetite for partying.

Everyone, from the arrangers to the engineers to the messengers and cafeteria ladies, was game for everything that the organizers planned for the evening. That included a surprisingly intense all-company Rock Paper Scissors tournament, a belly-busting round of Pinoy Henyo for the big bosses, and a group performance led by all of the arrangers. After heart-rousing speeches from Salito Malca and the announcement of our annual Employee of the Year (Bogs Jugo!), the real party started.

Shots were poured, songs were sung (or shouted) … and a lot of incriminating pictures were taken!

(Author: Tara Kristine Lim)

Hit Productions is pleased to announce that it will soon be opening its new mix room for cinema and long form material! The acoustics are designed by American acoustician Rod Gervais, whom we also partnered with in constructing our band recording room called Studio H.

The Hit Cinema is built for 7.1 DCP as well as for 5.1 DVD and TV work. It accommodates ten to twelve people on its sprawling leather couch and comfy theater seats, which are built by the same company that supplies the chairs for the Power Plant cinema.

Adjacent to the mix room is a large Foley room fully equipped with various floor surfaces, props, shoes, and even a bathtub for water and splash sound effects.

According to Hit technical director Dennis Cham, the theater is scheduled to undergo Dolby certification early next year. In the meantime, both Hit clients and employees alike are enjoying a “soft opening” with daily showings of their favorite high definition Blu Ray material, in awesome surround sound. Grab a bag of popcorn and come join us the next time you’re at the studio!

Film composer, actor, musical director, writer, and singer are just a few of Vincent De Jesus’ job descriptions. And now, he has officially added TV and radio commercials to his repertoire.

This month, we throw 5 questions at the newest member of Team Hit.

?1. You mentioned this is your first day job! How has it been going so far?

I have nothing but complete admiration and respect for Hit. I am in awe. People are always on their toes, their wits as sharp as a samurai sword, aesthetics beyond question. No wonder Hit is a big hit. I’m still trying to memorize all the names and faces though. Ang daming bagong mukha para sa akin!

2. You’ve been working on a bunch of projects already. Of those that aired recently, which are your favorites and why?

I’ve only been in heat … sorry, I mean in Hit … for three months but I’ve done quite a number of bids and studies. Most of my approved jingles’ storyboards are still being shot, some scores/jingles awaiting approval. But I definitely have my favorites. Kung ano man yun, for now… secret muna.

3. You’ve scored a lot of films and plays in the past, and now ads. How different is the process in scoring films/plays vs. ads?

The process is pretty much the same, really. Although films and tv shows take a longer time to score because of the length of the material. In advertising, projects are usually in seconds! Not in minutes or hours.

4. I hear Babae Sa Septic Tank is the country’s official entry to the Oscars Foreign Language Film Category. What is it like being a vital part of such a huge project?

I’m happy and proud to be part of Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank. I composed the songs and musical score of the film. It was such a fun movie to do. Marlon Rivera and Chris Martinez are dear friends. So is Eugene Domingo. We’re very excited about it being an Oscar entry. Back in 2004, CRYING LADIES from Unitel Pictures was also chosen as our Oscar entry, I also scored that film. When people notice your work and say good things about it, it tells you you must be doing something right. It’s a good feeling.

5. If it does get in the final nominees list, who will you be wearing to the Oscars?

I was planning on wearing a Barney suit but unfortunately I won’t be able to attend. I have revisions to do for a client.
